The Orihuela Department of Family Affairs continues its commitment to a more inclusive city by offering a year-long cycle of adapted cinema sessions for families with children with special needs, running throughout 2025.
“These families will be able to enjoy a film screening one Sunday each month, specially adapted to meet the needs of these children,” said Councillor for Family Affairs, María Carmen Portugal.
Adapted Cinema: A Special Sunday Each Month for Family Enjoyment
The sessions will be held one Sunday per month at 12:00 PM, with free admission and prior registration required.
To ensure a comfortable experience, special attention will be given to lighting, sound levels, and there will be a five-minute break midway through each film, explained Portugal.
The movies shown will be current family-friendly releases from the Axion Cinema at the Ociopía Shopping Centre, carefully selected to be appropriate for all audiences.
Families interested in attending must register for each session by sending an email to familia@orihuela.es, including the name of one family member and the number of attendees.
Due to limited capacity, advance registration is mandatory for each session.
The planned screening dates are:
April 27, May 25, June 22, July 20, August 17, September 21, October 19, November 23, and December 21.
However, families are advised to check the Department’s social media channels for any possible changes to the schedule.
Part of the ‘Paper Elephants’ Programme
“These adapted cinema sessions are part of the ‘Paper Elephants’ programme, a Family Department initiative aimed at supporting and accompanying families in Orihuela with members who have functional diversity,” the councillor added.
The pilot session, held in December 2024 featuring the film Niko, was met with great enthusiasm by local families and associations. This positive response inspired the Department to establish the project as a regular monthly event throughout the year.
“At the Department of Family Affairs, we are committed to making these adapted cinema sessions a reality, free of charge, so that no family with children with special needs misses out on this experience,” concluded Portugal.
