The new organic waste containers are now fully operational throughout the municipality of San Javier
San Javier has become the first of the 45 municipalities in the Region of Murcia to fully implement the new “brown bins”, adding the fifth colour of container to the range of receptacles for household waste on the streets.
Designed to receive organic waste, 400 containers have been distributed throughout the municipality and during March more than 200 tons of organic waste were collected in this way. Presenting the data, Mayor José Miguel Luengo reiterated that separating household waste is no longer an option but is now an obligation as Spain continues to aim for a circular economy as soon as possible.
The implantation of the brown bins in San Javier has been accompanied by a public awareness campaign with the slogan “El marrón está de moda” (Brown is the new fashion), reminding people that only organic waste should be deposited in them. This includes leftover food including the skin or peel of fruit and vegetables, coffee grinds, eggshells, paper serviettes, kitchen paper and small items of gardening waste (not branches!).
The bags used should be compostable, and a special phone line (694 241520) has been set up to answer queries from members of the public.
