Fourteen parents’ associations in Torrevieja have highlighted severe overcrowding in schools, with class sizes reaching 28 students in primary and 33 in secondary. They report that some schools, designed for four classes per level, are accommodating up to eight classes, with students from 44 different nationalities, many of whom struggle with the language.
The associations criticize the Generalitat for ignoring their requests for meetings. They demand immediate construction of pending schools, as the city could end the year with three schools and one full institute in temporary facilities due to a lack of spaces.
Torrevieja’s high influx of students exacerbates the situation, with secondary schools initially built for 600 students now hosting up to 1,350. This overpopulation causes exceptional consequences, unlike neighbouring municipalities such as San Miguel de Salinas, Los Montesinos, and Almoradí.
Parents emphasize the need for more human and material resources and criticize the inequality it creates when students are tested at regional or national levels. They also point out the dire need for infrastructure improvements, including remodelling existing facilities and constructing new ones.
The associations call for unity among parents, students, teachers, management teams, and the City Council to address this pressing issue. They underscore their urgent need for additional schools and better educational infrastructure to ensure that all students can reach their full potential. Mayor Eduardo Dolón, also a member of the Valencian Courts’ Education Committee, has been urged to address these concerns promptly.
