Manuel Mestre Barea, born on January 3, 1952, in Almería, Spain, is a distinguished former military officer and dedicated public servant. His extensive career spans over four decades, encompassing significant roles in the Spanish Air and Space Force and later transitioning into political leadership within the municipality of Orihuela.
Mestre embarked on his military journey at the Basic Air Academy in León, demonstrating exceptional leadership and strategic acumen. Throughout his service, he held pivotal positions, including Deputy Commander of the NATO Joint Force Command in Lisbon, where he played a crucial role in international operations such as Operation Ocean Shield, aimed at combating piracy around the Horn of Africa. In 2008, he was appointed Chief of the Canary Islands Air Command, and from 2013 to 2015, he served as the head of the Personnel Command to the Chief of Staff of the Air Force. Mestre also holds a master’s degree in international relations, completed at Air University in the United States.
After retiring from military service in 2015, Mestre settled in the Orihuela village of La Murada. His commitment to public service led him to enter politics, aligning with the Vox party. In the 2019 general elections, he was elected as a deputy for the Alicante constituency in the Congress of Deputies and was re-elected in the subsequent November 2019 election.
In 2023, Mestre was appointed as the Vice-Mayor of Orihuela and Councillor for the Coast, reflecting his dedication to addressing local issues. Operating from an office in the Playa Flamenca Town Hall, he emphasized the importance of being present on the coast to effectively manage and resolve local concerns. Mestre stated, “There are many problems on the coast that I will work hard to fix,” highlighting his proactive approach to governance.
Throughout his tenure, Mestre has focused on improving essential services in Orihuela Costa, including street cleaning, garden maintenance, and road repairs. Despite facing administrative delays, he remains optimistic, citing efforts like delegating the municipal company ILDO to manage the coast’s green areas. Looking ahead, Mestre envisions significant transformations for Orihuela Costa in 2025 and 2026, with projects such as promenade upgrades, urban furniture modernization, and the installation of a panoramic lift.
