THE Costa Blanca and Costa Calida racing correspondent Andrew Atkinson once again tipped a big race winner – when the Willie Mullins trained Burrows Saint won the BoyleSports Irish Grand National.
Jockey Ruby Walsh was successful on 6-1 shot Burrows Saint – who landed a gamble – in the 30 runners field at Fairyhouse on Easter Monday.
Well-backed favourite Burrows Saint, tipped each way, was confidently rode by Walsh – going on three from home – to win: “I want to win,” said Walsh, winning the Irish Grand National race for a third time.
Mullins completed a 1-2-3, with Walsh getting the pick of rides on unexposed Burrows Saint, a surprise choice according to Mullins.
“I was a little surprised Ruby chose him -I thought he might go for something with more experience,” said Mullins.
Burrows Saint made mistakes, but got into rhythm once the 3 miles 5 furlongs race slowed down: “He got travelling really well in a lovely position and jumped super most of the way,” said Walsh.
Trainer Mullins added: “The win shows what kind of ability he might have in the future. It was a tremendous result – delighted to win it for the yard too.”
