The Orihuela Council has initiated disciplinary proceedings against five individuals suspected of operating as illegal taxi drivers in the coastal area. The crackdown comes in response to growing concerns from licensed taxi drivers about the unregulated market and the negative impact it has on their livelihoods.

According to the Councillor for Citizen Security, Mónica Pastor, the Local Police identified the five individuals during the month of September. The police had previously reported the presence of “several” illegal taxi operators on social media.

Licensed taxi drivers have long complained about the lack of regulation and enforcement in the coastal area, particularly during the summer months when the population surges. The abundance of illegal operators has created long queues and waiting times, especially at popular locations like La Zenia Boulevard.

The taxi guild has repeatedly urged the Councillor for Transport, Víctor Sigüenza, to grant additional licenses to address the growing demand. While the proposed number of seven new licenses is insufficient to meet the full demand, it would provide some relief to the overburdened sector.

Taxi drivers have accused illegal operators of exploiting the situation, offering their services at taxi stands and even advertising on social media. The problem has become so prevalent that it has attracted attention from foreign residents, who have also been observed soliciting business.

The Orihuela Council’s action against illegal taxi drivers is a step towards addressing a longstanding issue in the coastal area. By enforcing regulations and holding offenders accountable, the council aims to protect the interests of licensed taxi drivers and ensure a fair and safe transportation system for residents and visitors alike.
