Despite the new Animal Protection Laws expressly prohibiting events involving animals, animal welfare isn´t extended to bulls, as the Valencia regional Government has proven by funding both bullfighting and the infamous “bus al carrer” events.
The Generalitat Valenciana has launched a line of aid for the bullfighting sector endowed with a budget of 25,440 euro, with which it is intended to provide financial support for the celebration of different events related to bullfighting.
This includes the “bus al carrer”, controversial because last year the human fatality record was broken, with 9 deaths, and almost a thousand people injured, the animals also suffer untold abuse during the events, but still, it´s tradition, so much so, last year, one politician remarked that so long as you have insurance, the deaths are insignificant.
Specifically, the aid will be aimed at financing public events that will take place in the Valencian municipalities that request it during the year 2023, either to individuals or to legal entities that can demonstrate their connection to the world of bullfighting, both fighting and festivities, traditional bullfighting, and will be granted through the competitive competition procedure.
In addition, the order of the Generalitat specifies that the expenses derived from the organisation and realisation of the events may be paid with these aids, as well as the advertising expenses and expenses of activities related to the bull fighting world that derive from those that are carried out and are correspond to the purpose of the subsidy, without the possibility of subcontracting to third parties.
In the Valencian Community there are around 260 municipalities that celebrate “bous al carrer” festivities and, of these, around 30 are in the province of Alicante.
