In the 2019 municipal elections Orihuela Costa failed to elect any representatives, the effects of which have been disastrous for the area, as the coast continues to be starved of the most basic of essential services that are considered fundamental to Spanish life. This is despite the area having a population far greater than that of the City of Orihuela.
The reason is quite simple; when it comes to locally elected representatives, the Pedanias consistently return many of their own residents as Councillors.
This situation has resulted in pedanias with populations as low as 2 or 3,000 receiving far superior public services, and a much larger proportion of the budget, at the cost of Orihuela Costa, POP 33,000, despite their limited populations.
Politically, certainly in the eyes of our Orihuela based leaders, the Orihuela Costa simply doesn’t exist, except as a source of income, but to a large part the fault is our own.
In the 2019 municipal elections, of the 7,300 registered voters on the coast only 2,300 actually turned out to vote. That is why the town of Orihuela Costa is in such a lamentable situation.
The public spending, solely in the hands of Orihuela politicians, is allocated to Orihuela City and it’s pedanias, very much to the detriment of the residents living in Orihuela Costa, who must shoulder the burden of their finances.
Without sufficient representation this situation will unfortunately continue which is why those who are able to do so must begin to appreciate that is only by casting your vote for PIOC that we will achieve Councillors on the coast who will fight to improve the situation for residents of Orihuela Costa, therefore we appeal to you all, individuals, associations, groups and businesses to join with us, all intent on achieving that one common goal.
