Murcia’s regional government is completing work to transform the former San Javier civil airport into a centre for aerospace and satellite technology businesses.
The 4,080-square-metre facility will accommodate up to eight companies, including start-ups, innovative small businesses and projects created by universities and technology centres. It will provide flexible workspaces, training classrooms, offices, meeting rooms and specialist telecommunications facilities.
The site will also become home to the new ESA BIC Region of Murcia, part of the European Space Agency’s network of business incubators. It will support companies using space technology, satellite services and data to develop products for other industries.
The project includes new parking areas, improved gardens, street lighting and modern security and fire-protection systems. Specialist training and business acceleration programmes will also be offered.
Regional Business Minister Luis Alberto Marín said the development would give the historic airport a new purpose, attract investment and create skilled employment.
San Javier’s civil airport operated for almost 50 years before closing following the opening of Corvera Airport. Mayor José Miguel Luengo said the aerospace centre would help the municipality maintain its strong connection with aviation while creating new economic opportunities.
