Authorities are investigating the deaths of an elderly British couple who were found deceased inside their home in a San Fulgencio urbanization.

The discovery was made by Social Services personnel after the couple failed to respond to their calls.

Identified as Jennifer – 76 years old – and Alan – 82 – both were said to have been in a situation of extreme vulnerability since January 18, 2025

Emergency responders arrived at the scene at around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, where they found the bodies of an 82-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman inside the residence.

Both were foreign residents in a vulnerable situation. The were  being monitored within an agreement with the San Fulgencio City Council which, under the title of the Comprehensive Municipal Emergency System (Sirem) of the Red Cross, is aimed at caring for the elderly who live without relatives in this town in the Vega Baja del Segura.

The man’s condition had recently worsened following a fall.

It was a member of the Sirem team, during one of the follow-ups of the case, who came across the terrible scene. The volunteer knocked on the door but no one answered. The team moved to the back of the house, where, by moving a blind, they could see the legs of a person on the floor. Faced with this situation, the Coordination Centre was immediately alerted to request the presence of firefighters and local police.

A San Fulgencio Civil Guard patrol entered the house, confirming that both individuals were deceased.

Based on the condition of the bodies, authorities believe they may have passed away several days ago. The Civil Guard’s Judicial Police unit has launched an investigation and conducted a thorough inspection of the residence.

The couple was enrolled in the Municipal Emergency Response System, a program designed to monitor and prevent cases of isolation and dependency among the large population of elderly foreign residents in the area.

The bodies have been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine of Alicante for the corresponding autopsy and full identification.

San Fulgencio’s urbanizations, El Oasis and La Marina, are located several kilometres from the town centre and are home to thousands of European retirees.

The municipality has one of the highest percentages of foreign residents in Spain, with approximately 66% of its 10,000 registered inhabitants being non-Spanish nationals.
