The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has awarded the contract to Constructora San Jose, SA to modernize and improve the energy efficiency of the Pilar de la Horadada tunnel. The bid was valued at 3,539,273.21 euros (VAT included), a 20% discount from the base budget of 4,405,798.47 euros. The project, approved last April, has an expected execution period of nine months.

Located at kilometre 772 of the Crevillente-Cartagena section of the AP-7, the modernization aims to improve tunnel safety and reduce energy consumption through efficient LED lighting management. Improvements include power supply, emergency lighting, public address systems, ventilation, fire detection cameras, and more.

The project is funded by the European ‘Next Generation’ funds, part of a 302-million-euro investment in sustainability and energy efficiency. The Pilar de la Horadada tunnel, a critical point for summer traffic, has previously faced flooding issues, notably during the 2019 DANA.
