A serious apartment fire in central Torrevieja forced the evacuation of a multi-storey residential building on Friday night, with emergency services successfully ensuring all residents were brought to safety.

The blaze broke out at around 8.00pm in a property on the corner of Ramón Gallud and María Parodi streets, above a row of commercial premises. Firefighters were alerted shortly afterwards and arrived at approximately 8.10pm, working for nearly two hours to bring the fire under control.

The fire was believed to have started on the third floor, reportedly caused by a portable heating device. A man inside the apartment at the time managed to escape unaided. Flames quickly spread to the second floor, with balconies engulfed and thick smoke visible across the area.

The building, comprising a ground floor, mezzanine, six upper floors and a penthouse, was almost completely evacuated as a precaution. Residents on lower floors were safely escorted into the street, while those on higher levels were instructed to remain inside their homes to avoid smoke exposure as firefighters tackled the blaze below.

Despite initial moments of alarm, and social media reports of deahs, the evacuation was carried out without injury. Before fire crews arrived, four Guardia Civil officers entered the building to check for anyone trapped. In total, four people and three animals were safely rescued. Although at least four apartments sustained material damage, no casualties were reported.
