The Alicante Provincial Council has announced a new subsidy to help municipalities in the Vega Baja offset the rising cost of transporting waste, allocating €162,200 to support the 27 towns within the Vega Baja Sostenible consortium. Local councils can apply for the funding until April 29.
The initiative aims to ease the financial burden caused by the lack of a local treatment facility, which forces municipalities to send waste to plants in Valencia, Murcia and even Cuenca. In just ten months, transport costs alone exceeded €3.19 million, excluding treatment fees.
Consortium president Francisco Cano welcomed the funding but stressed it only covers part of the expense, calling for a long-term solution through the construction of a local mechanical-biological treatment plant.
Plans for such a facility are already underway, with officials highlighting its potential to recover recyclable materials without relying on incineration or landfill. Meanwhile, a public visit to a similar plant in Guadassuar has been organised to showcase how the system works.
