Holy week started in Mojácar on Palm Sunday with the traditional Procession of the Donkey, with numerous people of the town, as well as visitors, joining in the live representation of Jesus entering Nazareth, before the events of the ´Passion, Death and Resurrection´ as written in the gospels.
At 11 a.m. the group made its way up the hill from the Fuente to the Santa María Parish Church, accompanied by the Municipal Band, which was followed by the blessing of the Palms and Olives and Holy Mass.
On Monday 15th at 9 p.m. there will be a concert of Sacred Music performed by the Municipal Band at the Church, accompanied by the local Rociero Choir “Embrujo Mojaquero.”
The following day, on Tuesday, the Stations of the Cross depart the Church at 8 p.m. and is carried through the streets of Mojácar Pueblo on the shoulders of the women bearers.
At 7.30 p.m. on Holy Thursday, there is another Holy Mass to celebrate the Last Supper and the Washing of the Feet, followed by the procession from the Church at 10.30 p.m. which takes the Nazarene and the Virgin of Sorrows through the streets.
The beautiful ornate thrones (tronos) with their sculpted images (pasos) have had to be adapted to suit the special characteristics of the locality and the narrow, winding streets which make their passage especially spectacular. There are places where the accuracy of the bearers is critical as there are often only a few centimetres to spare between the tronos and the houses and, at the Town Wall Gate the bearers are required to be almost on their knees to allow the pasos to squeeze through the gap.
The Holy Burial procession takes place on Good Friday at 12.30 p.m. followed by the Holy Offices at 7.30 p.m. then the procession of the Holy Burial at 10.30 p.m. Both processions depart from the Church for their journey with the Municipal Band through the streets of the town.
Mojácar Holy Week religious events come to an end on Easter Sunday at noon after Mass, with the final procession, that of the Risen Christ making its emotional last passage through the town.
