The Guardia Civil has arrested four men in Torrevieja who were wanted by judicial authorities in Sweden and Poland under European Arrest Warrants.
The arrests were made during routine street checks carried out by officers from the Guardia Civil’s Torrevieja headquarters. The controls are intended to identify people wanted by the courts and strengthen public safety in the town.
The first man detained was a 30-year-old Swedish national wanted by authorities in his home country in connection with alleged kidnapping, unlawful detention and theft offences.
Later that same day, officers located a second Swedish man who was also the subject of a European Arrest Warrant. He was wanted for drug-trafficking offences and to serve a prison sentence of one year and four months imposed in Sweden.
Two further arrests were made over the following days.
A 55-year-old Polish national was detained after officers established that he was wanted in connection with alleged attempted murder, kidnapping and illegal possession of firearms.
The fourth suspect, a 22-year-old Swedish national, was wanted by the authorities for a drug-related public health offence.
Following completion of the relevant police procedures, all four men were brought before the duty judge at Spain’s National Court in Madrid.
The National Court is responsible for dealing with cases involving European Arrest Warrants and will decide whether the suspects should remain in custody pending their surrender to the requesting countries or be released while proceedings continue.
European Arrest Warrants allow judicial authorities in European Union member states to request the arrest and transfer of suspects or convicted offenders located in another EU country.
