The Torrevieja Council has finalised its largest real estate transaction to date, acquiring six plots of land valued at €4,051,101. The purchase, made public this week, reflects a significant step in the city’s urban and infrastructure development plans.

Plots to Transform Public Transport

Four of the six plots are pivotal to the city’s vision for modernising its public transport system. Three of these are located in “Enclave 13” of the General Plan (PGOU), with a combined cost of €308,560. Covering 1,600 square metres, these plots are essential for the proposed intermodal station, which aims to integrate various modes of transportation.

While the intermodal station project remains in its early stages, progress has begun with a modification to the PGOU. The long-term plan includes a municipally-owned station that could support a future rail connection, as well as a new parking facility, a Civil Protection headquarters, and a space allocated for private educational or healthcare services.

The fourth plot, situated near the existing bus station in Colonia San Esteban, is also tied to this transport overhaul. Currently managed by Avanza (formerly Costa Azul), the station has been criticised for its poor condition, which detracts from the city’s image among visitors. The Council aims to replace this outdated facility with new infrastructure.

Green Spaces and Urban Renewal

The Council is also focusing on creating more green areas within Torrevieja. An urban renewal project near the bus station will involve demolishing the current structure and using the adjacent plot to establish a new green space. This area is strategically located near critical services such as the Civil Guard, courts, and a major Mercadona store.

Additionally, the fifth plot, situated in Los Romeros near the San Luis housing estate, will be transformed into another green zone. Once used for agriculture, the land is undevelopable due to its proximity to a natural park. The Council’s acquisition of this 127,601-euro plot will complement two adjacent parcels to expand recreational areas in the region.

Enhancing Coastal Access

The final purchase is a 553-square-meter beachfront plot near the iconic sculptures of Las Columnas on Playa del Cura. Currently housing a hospitality business, the property’s acquisition for €1,360,187 will address a bottleneck along Paseo de los Marineros. The city plans to widen the promenade and improve public access to the waterfront.

Strategic Investments for the Future

These acquisitions mark a significant investment in Torrevieja’s urban development, with plans to improve transportation, expand green spaces, and enhance the city’s coastal appeal. While the transactions have faced criticism from opposition parties, the government team views these purchases as crucial steps toward building a more functional, sustainable, and attractive city.
