Torrevieja City Council has provisionally approved €128,000 in direct grants for traders at the Municipal Food Market, known as “La Plasa”, to help reduce the economic impact of ongoing renovation and refurbishment works.
The aid package will support eight small businesses, microenterprises and self-employed traders operating in the market. Two beneficiaries will receive €22,000 each, while six others will receive €14,000 each, in line with the criteria set out in the grant regulations.
The initiative, promoted by the Department of Commerce and Hospitality, forms part of the council’s wider strategy to support local commerce while carrying out the modernisation of one of Torrevieja’s most historic commercial spaces.
According to the council, 50% of each grant will be paid in advance by bank transfer, providing immediate liquidity to the businesses affected by the works.
Councillor for Commerce and Hospitality Rosario Martínez Chazarra said the council was clear that the transformation and modernisation of La Plasa had to be accompanied by real support measures for its traders.
“Behind every stall there are families, jobs and many years of effort and dedication to local commerce,” she said.
Martínez added that the grants demonstrate the council’s commitment to one of Torrevieja’s most emblematic and much-loved spaces.
“We are carrying out a historic refurbishment of the Municipal Market, but at the same time we want our traders to feel supported and protected throughout the process, so that La Plasa continues to be a commercial, gastronomic and social landmark in the city,” she said.
The council says the refurbishment of La Plasa will not only improve facilities and services, but also modernise the municipal market while supporting the traders who have helped sustain local commerce and the city’s economy for many years.
