Torrevieja town hall has approved the construction licence of an 18,000 square metre buildable area of a 40,000 square metre plot of the La Hoya development for the construction of a DIY store for the German Bauhaus brand.

The company has 250 stores in twenty countries, almost all of them in the European Union, as well as Turkey and Iceland, with a total workforce of 17,000 people. Of these, 12 centres are in Spain, but the Torrevieja store will be the first in the Alicante province.

For comparison, the Zenia Boulevard store of the French chain Leroy Merlin occupies 7,700 square metres of commercial space.

The plot is located next to the CV-905 and what will be José Carreras Avenue – alongside the stormwater drainage project.

According to the Bauhaus requirements to establish a new store in a location in Spain, there must be “Real estate in the vicinity of cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants”, which makes Torrevieja currently borderline based on town hall figures, and once the long-term residential figures are published by the INE, removing those who should not be on the padrón, and those given temporary residency, the figure might tell a different story pending the sale of the new properties in Lagoons Village.
