The finish of 14th Baja Almanzora Rally Race, an event which kicks off the Spanish TT Championship, was followed by the presentation of prizes in Mojácar.
The weekend’s excitement had turned up a few surprises, which included the favourites not gaining their anticipated first position, with top places going to the Pita & Herrero duo in their Ford Ranger, Delgado & Pujol in their Buggy and González & Hernández in the Car Category.
The closing function took place at Mojácar Servigroup Hotel Marina Playa, which had hosted the teams and their followers, as well as being the headquarters for race logistics and organization.
Presenting the prizes were; Mojácar’s Mayor, Rosmari Cano, the President of the Andalucían Federation of Motorsports, Manuel Alonso, President of the Andinas Racing Organizing Committee, Emilio Viudez, along with representatives from the Spanish Federation of Motorsports. Also helping in the task were Mojácar’s Councillors for both Tourism and Sports, Emmanuel Agüero and Ana García, as well as Garrucha’s Sports Councillor.
Earlier that day, the last race of the weekend took place with a 168 km route, with a single timed sector. The provisional leaders in the general classification were dealt a blow when their vehicle broke down. The Dakar team, Hinojo and his co-driver Saiz, then broke the suspension of their buggy, putting them out of the race close to the end. Also, the Macías & Conde pair suffered the same fate shortly after the first round, when they too had to withdraw due to transmission breakdown.
The next race in the series will be the 4th Mar de Olivos TT Rally in Jaén on May 18 and 19, but for now, the roar of these powerful engines has faded away in Mojácar. However, a brand new, 24-hour race has been announced for the town in December, keeping Mojácar on the national and international sports forum.
Also, it importantly reinforces the efforts the Council and local businesses are making to bring visitors to the town out of season and add even more dates onto the already busy entertainment and events calendar.
