• The Council is putting this project, from the last legislative period, which was financed with funds from the Provincial Council, on public display

The Orihuela Council has put on public display the project aimed at improving road safety on the Villamartín and San Miguel roads, in Orihuela Costa. This plan, which includes a series of priority actions, seeks to modernise key infrastructures and reinforce the safety of pedestrians and drivers. During this period, the public and interested parties will be able to review the details of the project and present their objections before the tendering process is carried out.

Should you wish to offer suggestions or make objections to the project, Unidos por la Costa has offered to submit on your behalf. Simply send the detail of your submission to: avocaorihuelacosta@gmail.com

According to the documentation posted on the municipal website, the planned actions include the installation of recessed LED solar beacons in pedestrian crossings to improve their visibility, especially in low light conditions. This measure, valued at 5,968.20 euros, aims to reduce the risk of accidents in the busiest crossing areas.

The project, which was planned in September this year, also includes the renovation of the public lighting in two phases, replacing the existing lights with highly efficient and durable LED technology. Phase 1 will involve work on the section between Calle Venezuela and Calle Dos Torres, with a budget of 39,383.70 euros. Phase 2 will cover from Calle Dos Torres to the intersection of Calle Malvinas and Calle Mulhacén, with an estimated cost of 46,614.26 euros. According to the project’s authors, these measures will not only reduce energy consumption, but will also increase the feeling of night-time safety.

The improvement of bus stops is also planned through demolition work, replacement of pavements and the incorporation of adapted elements. This project, which has a budget of 3,615.45 euros, seeks to guarantee the mobility of all users, including those with reduced mobility.

Finally, the documentation on display proposes the installation of educational radar lights, which will include a power supply system using solar panels. With a cost of 8,324.76 euros, these devices, they point out, will contribute to raising awareness among drivers about speed, increasing safety at critical points on the roads and reducing the risk of accidents.

Resurfacing required

Both the Villamartín and San Miguel roads are two of the roads with the most traffic in Orihuela Costa after the N-332. Both connect the residential areas on the front line with the urbanisations inland. In the case of Villamartín, the state of the road surface is particularly worrying, dotted with dangerous potholes that have been the subject of recurring complaints from residents. Some of them have even opted to take the risk and resurface some of the potholes in the road surface at night and at their own expense. In the current budget, one million euros were specifically reserved for this type of work in Orihuela Costa.

Orihuela Costa

On the San Miguel road, the Council has already recently acted on one of the ‘black spots’. replacing the crash barrier on the section of road next to the Trasvase canal, near the two access junctions to the Campoamor and Las Ramblas golf courses. A stretch of high traffic where it is common for cars travelling at excessive speed to end up crashing into the barrier, with the risk that this entails of falling down the embankment.
