Efforts to establish an independent municipality encompassing La Manga del Mar Menor and surrounding areas are gaining momentum. The president of the Pro-Ayuntamiento Entre Dos Mares committee, Luis Cabello, expressed confidence that the initiative has “the necessary support to become a reality sooner rather than later.”

Last Friday, the committee held a meeting in La Manga del Mar Menor to consolidate support for the proposal. The envisioned municipality would unite various localities, including Veneziola, El Sabinar, Los Belones, La Manga Club, Cabo de Palos, Cala Reona, Playa Paraíso, and others, covering a wide swath of the area from the Mar Menor to the Mediterranean coastline.

A United Cause

Residents, business owners, and supporters from the areas that would form the new town came together during the meeting to discuss the project’s progress and goals. Cabello emphasized the collective commitment:

“The project has the support of the local population, as evidenced by the large turnout today—people united by a shared vision for our future municipality.”

Steps Toward Independence

The committee has nearly 700 members actively working to achieve the necessary threshold of 51% of resident signatures in Favor of the proposal. The total population of the affected areas stands at 14,200 registered citizens. Achieving this majority would pave the way for presenting the case to the relevant authorities and initiating the formal process of independence.

What’s Next?

The push for independence reflects growing dissatisfaction with the current administrative structure, with proponents arguing that local governance would better address the unique needs of the region. If successful, the initiative would bring about significant changes to the political and administrative landscape of the area, empowering the new municipality to prioritizse local issues and development.

The road to independence remains a challenge, but with strong local support and determination, the movement continues to gather momentum.
