The Orihuela City Council has launched a comprehensive renovation of Los Pinos Street in Punta Prima, addressing a long-standing demand from residents. Mayor Pepe Vegara, joined by Infrastructure Councillor Víctor Valverde and Coast Councillor Manuel Mestre, visited the site to review the progress of paving and sidewalk improvement works on a street that has faced accessibility issues for decades.
For years, the presence of large pine trees had made pedestrian movement unsafe. The ongoing project provides a permanent solution by reducing the road to a single lane, widening the sidewalk to 1.5 meters, and converting the tree-affected side into a landscaped area. So far, around 100 meters of curbing and 190 square meters of paving tiles have been installed. Once the sidewalk is completed, the road surface will be milled and repaved to eliminate damage caused by tree roots.
Councillor Valverde described the works as “a response to a historic neighborhood demand,” highlighting that this is part of the council’s broader effort to improve infrastructure across the entire municipality. Thanks to dedicated funding and administrative planning, the project is being carried out through the municipal company SGM-Ecoplan.
Councillor Mestre added that approximately 100 workers are currently engaged in various maintenance tasks across Orihuela Costa, including roadwork, gardening, and electrical services. “This government team is committed to our coastal residents, and this project is just one example of what’s to come,” he said.
Mayor Vegara emphasized the symbolic importance of the works: “This is a 20-year demand we are finally fulfilling. It’s part of a long but steady process of building the Orihuela we all want.”
Role of Ecoplan in Orihuela Costa
Vegara also praised SGM-Ecoplan, the public company responsible for maintenance in Orihuela Costa, which has resolved over 235 of 308 reported issues in the past four months. Key actions include:
- Road repairs and resurfacing in Campoamor, Playa Flamenca, Villamartín, and La Zenia.
- Improvement of sidewalks and accessibility, including pedestrian crossings and new sections like Los Pinos.
- Renewal of signage and road markings, especially in school zones.
- Coastal maintenance, such as repositioning walkways, pergolas, and showers after storms.
- General upkeep, including debris removal, cleaning, and repair of railings and lighting.
The mayor concluded that Orihuela Costa “finally has a stable and effective maintenance service that restores dignity to its streets and public spaces.”
