Torrevieja, Spain – Torrevieja University Hospital is setting a new benchmark in kidney care by providing home dialysis to 25% of its chronic dialysis patients—well above the national average. Out of 136 patients receiving ongoing dialysis treatment, 30 are using peritoneal dialysis at home, and 4 are on home hemodialysis. The remaining 102 patients continue their treatment through in-center hemodialysis.
This push toward home-based care reflects the hospital’s commitment to improving patient quality of life by offering flexible, comfortable treatment options that fit into daily routines. Nationally, only 10.6% of dialysis patients in Spain use peritoneal dialysis, according to the 2023 Spanish Renal Registry. Torrevieja Hospital’s 22% rate places it well ahead of this figure, positioning it as a leader in home dialysis care.
Home dialysis—particularly peritoneal dialysis—allows patients to manage their condition in the comfort of their homes. It’s less invasive, more environmentally friendly, and better suited for those who cannot easily make frequent trips to the hospital due to work or personal reasons.
The hospital’s Nephrology Department has taken significant steps to integrate patient-centered innovations. With a focus on flexibility and individualized care, the department ensures that patients have access to the best therapy options available.
Torrevieja Hospital also features a specialized Cardiorenal Unit and an Advanced Chronic Kidney Disease (ERCA) Unit, both accredited under the national ACERCA project. A core goal of this initiative is to promote home-based kidney therapies, further supporting the hospital’s progressive approach.
In sum, Torrevieja University Hospital is not only meeting but exceeding national standards in chronic kidney care—proving that modern, patient-focused treatment models can significantly enhance quality of life for those managing kidney disease.
