Starting in 2026, owners of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric cars, as well as large families and classic vehicles over 25 years old, will receive a 75% discount on their vehicle tax in Torrevieja.
The City Council approved a motion proposed by Sueña Torrevieja councillor Pablo Samper, which was supported by all political groups after incorporating an amendment from the governing Partido Popular (PP).
Additional Tax Reduction Not Included
Sueña Torrevieja initially proposed an additional 20% tax reduction for all cars and motorcycles, but this measure was not included in the final version amended by the PP, which is responsible for processing the motion. Samper pointed out that this initiative updates key aspects of a tax ordinance that has remained unchanged since 2014.
The PP stated that tax benefits for electric and hybrid vehicles were already part of its electoral program and agreed to adopt Sueña Torrevieja’s proposal.
Support for Large Families
The PP’s amendment also introduced tax benefits for large families, arguing that they typically own larger vehicles, which incur higher costs.
Financial Impact and City Council Revenue
Torrevieja currently has 66,689 registered cars and motorcycles, generating €5.3 million annually through the Motor Vehicle Tax. Although tax collection is managed by SUMA Gestión Tributaria, the responsibility ultimately lies with the municipal government.
The motion received unanimous approval from all parties—PP, PSOE, Sueña Torrevieja, and Vox—a rare occurrence, especially for an opposition-led initiative. Typically, such unanimous support is reserved for symbolic institutional declarations, and many political motions are left unimplemented.
Implementation Underway
However, this proposal will not be shelved. Government sources from the PP confirmed that the measure is already being reviewed by the treasury department for implementation. The financial impact is expected to be minimal, as electric vehicles currently account for less than 10% of all registered vehicles.
These sources also emphasised that revenue from vehicle taxes funds public road improvements, including resurfacing and pedestrian safety measures implemented in recent years.
