Orihuela City Council will receive €3.33 million from Spain’s Biodiversity Foundation after successfully completing the objectives of its “Refluye Mi Río” river restoration and flood-prevention project.
The scheme restored areas along the River Segura, including Las Norias, Molino de la Ciudad, La Campaneta and Soto del Reguerón in Molins. Work was also carried out upstream and downstream from Orihuela city.
The project focused on removing invasive plants, particularly giant reeds, which can obstruct the river, restrict water flow and increase flood damage. Native riverside vegetation was planted to strengthen riverbanks, regenerate natural habitats and improve the area’s resistance to extreme weather.
Footpaths and riverside areas were also recovered to make them more accessible and attractive to residents and visitors.
The total eligible project cost was €3.75 million. After the final assessment, €3.51 million was accepted for funding, with the Biodiversity Foundation covering 95%, equivalent to €3,331,515. No expenditure was rejected, and no financial penalties were imposed for technical issues or late submissions.
A site inspection conducted in January 2026 also produced a favourable result.
Environment Councillor Noelia Grao said the decision confirmed that Orihuela had met the project’s environmental objectives and recognised the work undertaken to restore the Segura and reduce flood risks.
The project was supported through Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and financed by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU programme.
