The Local Government Board of Orihuela has approved the regulatory framework for a new financial aid program aimed at promoting childbirth and supporting mothers during the early stages of motherhood.

“For the first time, Orihuela will have a dedicated financial aid line to encourage childbirth and provide assistance to mothers as they begin a new stage in life,” said Mª Carmen Portugal, City Councillor for Family Affairs.

The Family Affairs Department emphasized that this initiative seeks to establish a basic municipal regulation that protects maternity at the local level.
“Supporting motherhood and promoting family-friendly policies must be an institutional priority,” Portugal added.

Eligibility Criteria

Once the official call is published, the aid may be requested by women—or, where applicable, legal guardians of newborns—who meet the following requirements:

  • Must be officially registered (empadronadas) in Orihuela for a minimum of three uninterrupted years prior to the start of the application period.
  • Must have given birth between January and December of the year prior to the call for applications.
  • Must be 18 years or older, either Spanish or a foreign national with legal residence in Spain.
  • Must be up to date with tax obligations, Social Security contributions, and have no debts with the City Council.
  • Must not be disqualified under any of the exclusion criteria set out by the General Subsidies Law.
  • Must have a bank account in their name.

Application Period Opening Soon

Councillor Portugal stated that the next step will be the official publication of the call, at which point the application period will open.

This is a pioneering measure by the Family Affairs Department, designed to protect maternity and provide early support to families following the birth of a child.
