As of the early morning hours of Tuesday, 8 July 2025, residents across Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa may have noticed a strong smell of smoke lingering in the air.
According to official information from the Alicante Provincial Fire Department (Bomberos Diputación de Alicante), this smoke is not the result of any local fire. Instead, it is being carried by the wind from a large forest fire currently affecting the Baix Ebre region in Tarragona.
The wildfire in Baix Ebre has already consumed over 1,500 hectares of forest land. Due to the current wind patterns, smoke is being transported southwards, moving through the Valencian Community and reaching areas as far as Murcia, including Torrevieja.
There is no immediate danger to public safety in Torrevieja, but as a precaution, the public is advised to follow these recommendations:
RECOMMENDED SAFETY MEASURES
- Keep doors and windows closed to reduce indoor smoke exposure.
- Limit time spent outdoors, especially for vulnerable individuals such as:
- People with respiratory conditions
- The elderly
- Children
- Use air purifiers if available, or set your air conditioning to recirculate indoor air.
