• The Torrevieja team defeats Balonmano Alarcos Ciudad Real 31–27 in a match with little at stake for either side
Club Balonmano Mare Nostrum Torrevieja wrapped up their 2024/2025 season with a 31–27 home win over Balonmano Alarcos Ciudad Real at the Pabellón Cecilio Gallego. The victory, their third in a row, secures Mare Nostrum an 11th-place finish in Group E of Spain’s third-tier handball division.
Despite the match having no major implications for either team, both sides brought intensity to the court. Ciudad Real arrived in Torrevieja still with a shot at finishing sixth in the league, while Mare Nostrum aimed to climb the standings, give minutes to more players, and push Rubén Ruíz to become the group’s top scorer — a goal that ultimately fell short.
The match was tightly contested, though Mare Nostrum held the edge for much of it, with a sharp first line breaking through the opponent’s 6–0 defense and a solid back line containing the visitors’ attacks, especially their dangerous pivot play. At halftime, the home team led 14–13.
In the second half, coach Antonio Cámeron rotated in more of his regular starters, and the team gained momentum. Taking advantage of Ciudad Real’s fatigue, Mare Nostrum found success on the fast break and began to pull away. The lead grew steadily, culminating in the final score of 31–27.
With this win, Mare Nostrum closes the season with 21 points, a record of 10 wins, 1 draw, and 19 losses, and finishes in 11th place.
