The Department of the Environment has recently completed maintenance and restoration work on two of San Pedro del Pinatar’s beaches, Villananitos and La Puntica. This included sand replenishment and removal, all conducted under proper authorizations and technical supervision.
During the first half of March, the City Council began the first phase of beach maintenance along the Mar Menor, depositing 1,500 cubic meters of sand to restore the beaches’ natural profile and width — 1,000 cubic meters at Villananitos and 500 at La Puntica.
The work, approved by the General Directorate of the Coast and the Sea under the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, was carefully scheduled during low tide and cooler months to minimize ecological impact. Lower water temperatures slow down the ecosystem’s metabolism, reducing disruption to marine life.
Dredging is limited to the first 10 meters of the shoreline, with shallow extractions to avoid uneven surfaces or sinkholes. A turbidity barrier has been used to prevent sediment dispersal, and all activities are closely monitored by municipal technicians to ensure no disturbance to seagrass meadows or protected marine habitats.
In the coming weeks, additional sand placement will continue, followed by the installation of wooden walkways at key access points. Routine sand cleaning and maintenance of beach facilities — such as restrooms, footbaths, and access areas — also continue throughout the year.
Councilor for the Environment, Javier Castejón, emphasized the town’s commitment to year-round beach upkeep, stating that these efforts will ensure the beaches are “in perfect condition for Easter.”
