A chilling chapter in Spain’s criminal history takes another turn as Alberto S.G., the infamous ‘Cannibal of Ventas,’ is transferred to Fontcalent Psychiatric Prison in Alicante. The convicted murderer, who brutally killed, dismembered, and even ate parts of his own mother’s body, is set to serve his 15-year sentence behind the walls of the specialized facility after requesting psychiatric assistance.
A Crime That Shocked the Nation
In May 2021, a jury convicted Alberto of homicide and desecration of a corpse after he slaughtered his 68-year-old mother in their Madrid apartment between January and February 2019. Using a saw and knives, he methodically dismembered her, scattering body parts throughout the home—some in plastic containers, others horrifyingly left for their pet dog. For at least two weeks, he allegedly consumed her remains.
Despite his shocking actions, the court ruled that he was fully aware of his crimes, dismissing his claims of temporary psychosis triggered by cannabis use.
“The Voices Told Me to Do It”
During his trial, Alberto painted a disturbing picture of his mental state, claiming he was tormented by hallucinations and sinister voices that ordered him to kill and dismember his mother.
“I wasn’t experiencing reality as it was. Instead, I was delirious, psychotic, and paranoid,” he wrote in a letter to his lawyer.
But the court was unmoved by his pleas, ruling that his cognitive faculties were intact at the time of the crime. Alberto insisted that police failed to assess his mental state after his arrest and that his defense attorney coerced him into pleading memory loss during the trial.
“Every time I think of my mother, my heart sinks,” he said in his final statement—words that failed to erase the horror of what he had done.
A Gruesome Scene That Haunts Investigators
When officers arrived at the crime scene in Madrid’s Guindalera neighborhood, they were met with a nightmare straight out of a horror movie.
As they stepped inside, Alberto greeted them with a chilling confession: “She’s dead.”
Scattered body parts lay in every room—the victim’s head and scalp, complete with an ear, sat on the bed, while another portion of her remains was stuffed inside the dog’s kennel. The bathroom bore signs of blood-soaked violence, with knives and tools used in the grisly act.
No Mercy from the Courts
Despite his desperate claims of insanity, the judges rejected any notion of mental impairment, affirming that he was fully capable of understanding his actions. His conviction includes:
- Homicide with the aggravating factor of kinship
- Desecration of a corpse
- Dismemberment and cannibalism over at least 15 days
Now, the “Cannibal of Ventas” is locked away in Fontcalent, where he will serve his sentence—not as a misunderstood madman, but as a murderer whose actions shocked Spain to its core.
