The PSOE and Cambiemos groups in Orihuela have demanded the appearance of Education Councillor Vicente Pina before the City Council to address what they call the “disastrous management” of School No. 20 in Orihuela Costa.

Intended to ease classroom overcrowding, the school has instead become a “symbol of improvisation, disorganization, and opacity” by both the local and regional governments, according to the opposition.

Parents have expressed outrage over the lack of essential services such as school transport, cafeterias, sufficient teaching staff, and accessible infrastructure.

PSOE and Cambiemos accuse Pina and the government of indifference and failure to engage with affected families, calling it a “serious lack of empathy and responsibility.”

Socialist councillor María García described the situation as a “nightmare for families,” insisting that the councillor must explain how such “chaos” was allowed to unfold, and that the lack of planning and accountability cannot go unpunished.

Cambiemos spokesperson Leticia Pertegal criticized Pina’s “unacceptable” response, saying he merely relayed regional government statements without offering real solutions. She stressed that education “must not be treated with indifference.”

  1. The opposition wants Pina to explain:
  2. Why School No. 20 was turned into a satellite of CEIP Playas de Orihuela, over 5 km away, rather than becoming an independent school.
  3. Why the school fails to meet accessibility standards, and what measures will be taken.
  4. The plan to address teaching staff shortages.
  5. When basic services like transport, cafeterias, and extracurricular activities will be available.
  6. How structural issues such as rain damage occurred and will be resolved.

PLANS TO STABILIZE THE SCHOOL’S OPERATION

In the words of Socialist Councilor María García, “what was supposed to be a solution to educational overcrowding in Orihuela Costa has become a true nightmare for families,” so the Education Councilor must appear to provide a clear answer about the reasons that led to “this chaotic situation.” In her opinion, “the lack of planning, transparency, and accountability cannot go unpunished.”
