Two companies, Espiral de Inversiones y Patrimonio and Inmuebles del Sol, are planning to construct a private hospital in the E-3 sector of El Barranco, located in Orihuela Costa, near the commercial area of La Zenia.

The proposed site is between Calle Pimienta and Calle Clavo, near the Villamartín road and just across from the Los Dolses Commercial Centre, approximately 500 meters from the AP-7 highway.

The plan includes 16,000 square metres of commercial and health-related spaces, with 51% designated for a hospital or nursing home.

This project aims to provide private healthcare services to the area’s 30,000 year-round residents, many of whom are foreign nationals accustomed to private insurance. The demand for healthcare services in the area is high, particularly as the population increases during peak tourist seasons. Currently, Orihuela Costa only has one health centre, which is far below the necessary capacity.

The Orihuela Costa has been waiting for the expansion of the Aguamarina health centre or the construction of a second clinic for some years. Meanwhile, other healthcare facilities in the region include the public University of Torrevieja Hospital and the private Quirón Hospital.

The Orihuela Council has been working on a development plan for the E-3 sector for six years, which is now in the environmental phase. The plan includes provisions to protect local endangered species and manage natural resources responsibly.

The project has faced some opposition, with ecologists arguing that the reclassification of this land for development could violate sustainability laws and create further urban overdevelopment in an already overcrowded area.

Despite this, the city continues to push forward with the plan, expecting the final approval process to move into the urban planning phase soon.
