The Guardia Civil in the Murcia region has conducted an investigation into a road incident on the A-7 highway near Murcia, where the cargo from a heavy articulated truck fell onto the roadway. The investigation has resulted in the identification, location, and questioning of three individuals, who are now being investigated for endangering road safety and violating workers’ rights.

The Incident

The event occurred in June on the A-7 highway, which connects Algeciras to Barcelona, within the municipality of Murcia. A heavy articulated truck lost its entire cargo, leading to a traffic hazard.

Upon receiving the alert, the Guardia Civil’s Traffic Unit deployed several patrols to the scene, where they secured the area and removed obstacles from the roadway to prevent further accidents.

The investigation revealed that the truck was transporting two hydraulic jacks, each weighing approximately four tons—roughly the weight of three cars. The cargo was being transported from Alhama de Murcia to Lugo.

Major Road Hazard

The fallen cargo not only blocked traffic but also caused a spill of hundreds of litres of oil from inside the hydraulic jacks. This significantly increased the risk of accidents on the road.

The incident occurred just 21 minutes after the journey began, with the truck covering only 30 kilometres at a speed of approximately 70 km/h.

Cause of the Incident

Investigators determined that the incident resulted from improperly secured cargo. The hydraulic jacks fell onto the road due to a defective securing system, as the driver had used an inadequate strap to fasten the heavy equipment.

Both the transporter and the loader failed to fulfil their responsibility of ensuring the cargo was properly secured, violating labour and safety regulations.

Legal Actions

The driver, transporter, and loader are now under investigation for:

A traffic safety offense, due to reckless driving and creating a serious road hazard.

A labour rights violation, for negligence in hiring, providing proper transport equipment, and supervision.

The Guardia Civil has concluded the investigation and filed legal proceedings against the three individuals.
