The leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has reaffirmed his support for Valencian president Carlos Mazón despite expressing disappointment over his response to the October 29 floods.
CONCERNS OVER FEIJÓO’S SILENCE
In recent days, Feijóo’s silence on Mazón’s situation had caused unease within the PP. The presence of key party figures, Esteban González Pons and Borja Sémper, at the first mascletà of Fallas in Valencia over the weekend failed to ease concerns. Mazón, meanwhile, faced mounting pressure following a difficult week, with criticism over his handling of the disaster, media scrutiny from Madrid, and ongoing protests.
FEIJÓO BREAKS HIS SILENCE
A week after the crisis escalated, Feijóo finally addressed the issue on Monday, stating, “I have not changed my mind,” making it clear that he still backs Mazón. However, he acknowledged that the Valencian government “was not up to the task” in managing the flood crisis.
Mazón’s conflicting explanations of his schedule on the day of the disaster have widened the rift between the two leaders. Internal voices within the PP are calling for swift action to prevent further damage to the party and Feijóo himself.
A CONDITIONAL FUTURE
Despite the growing pressure, the party leadership has chosen to maintain public support for Mazón for now. Feijóo emphasized, “Mazón has created a government crisis and has tied his future to the reconstruction efforts,” but dodged questions about whether he had asked Mazón to step down.
Meanwhile, Mazón remains tight-lipped. At an economic event in Alicante on Monday, he avoided questions from the press, offering only a brief statement: “We are working,” as the region faced new weather alerts in Castellón.
