On Friday, the Auditorio Municipal Arte Musical in Rafal was the venue for the official presentation of the book Crónicas de Rafal, written by the town’s official chronicler, Antonio Mula Franco.

The publication, spanning nearly 100 pages, compiles a selection of historical chronicles documenting significant events in Rafal since the creation of the chronicler’s position in 2016.

The book, which includes nine selected texts and an account of the chronicler’s appointment, aims to make Rafal’s history more accessible, particularly to those without digital access. To enhance the reading experience, additional sources, documents, and references have been incorporated, accessible via QR codes linking to online materials.

Following an introduction by Laura Velasco, Councillor for Culture, and a prologue by Mayor Manuel Pineda, the book highlights key historical moments, including a lecture by the 16th Marqués de Rafal, academic talks by university professors from Alicante and Valencia, and a presentation by the late Josep ‘Pep’ Francés, a distinguished honorary citizen, on Rafal’s origins.

The collection also covers more recent events such as the 2019 DANA floods, the chronicler’s visit to the Palacio del Marqués de Rafal in Orihuela, and a comparison between the COVID-19 pandemic and the 1918 Spanish flu, which also impacted the town.

The project was supported by Gabriel Valero, Councillor for Education and Local Development, and funded through a grant from the Alicante Provincial Government, allowing for the printing of 200 copies in both Spanish and Valencian.

Valero expressed hopes for future volumes, which will further expand on Rafal’s history, including biographies of notable local figures.
