Orihuela’s Councilor for the Environment, Noelia Grao, and Councilor for Urban Planning, Matías Ruiz, held a working meeting on Monday with Carles Borrás, Deputy Director General of Protected Areas and Wildlife; Patricia González, Director of the Natural Resource Management Plan (VIP); Francisco José Martínez, Director of the Protected Landscape of Sierra Escalona and its surroundings; environmentalist Pablo Perales; and the Mayor of Torremendo, Sonia Bautista.
The purpose of the meeting was to present Orihuela City Council’s proposal to establish an Interpretation Centre for Sierra Escalona and the Pedrera Reservoir in the district of Torremendo.
“We believe this area should be recognized on the map due to its strategic location between the mountain range and the reservoir,” explained Noelia Grao. Additionally, the initiative includes a reforestation project for the surroundings of the Pedrera Reservoir.
Matías Ruiz highlighted that the proposed centre could feature an observation deck and natural trails for both pedestrians and cyclists, offering guided visits for the general public and school groups. “This represents a strong commitment to promoting and showcasing the natural environment of Sierra Escalona and the district of Torremendo,” he added.
The proposal was well received by those present at the meeting.
Both councillors also noted that previous discussions had already taken place with Raúl Mérida, Regional Secretary for the Environment, to define the conditions for the designation of Sierra Escalona as a Natural Park and the Natural Resource Management Plan associated with this status.
