At the last Mojácar municipal plenary session, chaired by the Mayor Francisco García, the urban development agreement was unanimously approved that will allow the long-awaited rehabilitation of the Moresco Hotel, a historic building that has been in an abandoned state for years.

This project, led by the current governing team, represents a before and after for the tourist and urban development of the municipality, consolidating its commitment to the recovery of emblematic spaces.

Francisco García highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating: “The Hotel Moresco has, for too long, been a symbol of decay and abandonment at the entrance to our village. With this agreement, not only are we recovering a historic space, but we are also sending a clear message that Mojácar is moving towards the future with firm steps. This rehabilitation is key to revitalising our tourist economy, improving our image as a destination and returning to the village a space that deserves to be on a par with its beauty and prestige.”

The agreement establishes that the use of the property will be strictly as a hotel, allowing compatible activities such as restaurants, cafes or spaces for events. In addition, the transfer of 49 public parking spaces is guaranteed, integrated into the 2,000 square metres intended for parking.

Among the commitments acquired by the owners is included carrying out a mandatory landscape study to ensure the visual integration of the building with the environment, and the commitment to provide all the necessary documentation to complete the process of modifying the General Urban Development Plan (PGOU).

The Mayor of Mojácar stressed that the agreement also protects the municipality’s interest as the council will be able to terminate it if the commitments are not fulfilled or if causes of public interest arise. “We are ensuring that Mojácar always has the last word. This agreement puts the village first and guarantees that this rehabilitation is carried out under our conditions and with maximum responsibility”, Fran García added.

The approval of the agreement was received unanimously by the political groups, who agreed on the importance of this project for Mojácar. During the debate, emphasis was placed on the need to maintain the hotel use of the building, preventing it from being converted into tourist apartments, and on the urgency of solving the historical problem of the deterioration of the building.

The Hotel Moresco, located in a strategic location at the entrance to the municipality, has for decades been a symbol of the tourist splendour of Mojácar and, more recently, of abandonment. Its rehabilitation represents not only the recovery of an iconic building, but also an opportunity to boost the local economy and strengthen the municipality’s tourist offer.

This project is added to other initiatives promoted by the local government, such as the Local Plan for Sports Facilities, also approved at the plenary session, which seeks to modernise Mojácar’s sports infrastructure and promote a healthy lifestyle.

With the leadership of Mayor Francisco García and his team, Mojácar is taking a firm step towards modernisation and development, consolidating itself as a leading tourist destination and a municipality that cares for its heritage and its people.
