Ciudadanos spokesman José Aix has accused the Orihuela Council of overpaying for the expropriation of a road in Villamartín. According to Aix, the Council paid two million euros to a construction company for the road linking the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre and the Villamartin urbanisation.
Aix claims the payment could have been reduced to 1.2 million euros, potentially saving the municipality 800,000 euros.
During the last plenary session, Aix questioned Mayor Pepe Vegara, who also serves as the councillor for Finance, about the new payment to the company linked to the Pedrera family. Aix asserted that, during his tenure as councillor for Urban Planning, he had managed to lower the price.
Since the question was not recorded prior to the session, Vegara opted to respond later in writing. The Council’s legal department stated that the amount paid was determined by an independent jury.
The road acquisition was initiated by the PP-Cs government team in the previous legislature, with the Plenary approving a 1.2 million euro investment in September 2022.
