A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening between 20:00 and 21:00 on Calle del Morral in Orihuela Costa, where a minor fatally stabbed a 15-year-old girl in the neck. Initially, it was believed the incident took place inside one of the illegally occupied houses in the area. The girl, of Spanish nationality, was transferred to the University Hospital of Torrevieja, where she died from her injuries.
The victim was found injured by her brother at around 8:40 p.m.
Additionally, a fire broke out in a nearby bungalow. Authorities are investigating the circumstances and the relationship between the youths involved, with one line of inquiry focusing on the girl’s boyfriend. The Civil Guard has cordoned off the house where the girl’s brother resides on Calle Venus, near the crime scene, whilst officers are is collecting evidence.
Overnight on Sunday, the former boyfriend, a 17-year-old youth was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of the murder. The girl had apparently broken off her relationship with him a few days ago. According to sources close to the investigation there had been no complaints of previous abuse involving the pair.
The La Florida urbanization, where the incident occurred, is typically a quiet area with limited lighting. Neighbours reported seeing several groups of young people that afternoon, which is unusual.
In a related note, three months ago, a woman killed her partner in self-defence during an argument. The 49-year-old woman, who was injured, called emergency services and explained that she had used a knife to defend herself against her husband. The family, of Norwegian nationality, had been on holiday in Spain. The woman was arrested and placed in pretrial detention where she still remains.
The Unidos por la Costa association has raised concerns about growing insecurity in Orihuela Costa on many occasions, citing issues such as illegal housing occupancy, community disputes, and fraudulent utility connections. Recent incidents, including a mistaken armed assault in the Torrezenia urbanization in Lomas de Cabo Roig, on a family in October, highlight the increasing security challenges in the area.
