A car crash in Lomas de Cabo Roig, Orihuela Costa,on Monday morning has once again raised concerns about the safety of the AP-7 motorway and the access of pedestrians along the road leading from La Regia to Lomas de Cabo Roig. The vehicle, which collided with bridge safety barriers, was at risk of falling onto the motorway.

Firefighters were called to the scene to secure the vehicle. The Provincial Consortium received a warning from the Local Police about the imminent danger. Members of the Torrevieja Fire Park responded and successfully stabilized the vehicle without any injuries.

The incident has highlighted the need for a pedestrian walkway on the AP-7. The bridge is a crucial connection between several urbanizations and nearby amenities including local supermarkets and the popular Cabo Roig strip. Local residents have been advocating for a safe pedestrian route for many years and, despite the promises of successive governments of all parties, absolutely nothing has been accomplished.

Many local residents, as well as the AVCRL Residents Association, have taken to social media to share their frustration at the lack of protection for pedestrians claiming that it was just a matter of time that such an incident ocurred.

The current government says that it has prioritized this infrastructure with the new budgets including 1.3 million euros for the construction of the pedestrian bridge. The City Council has also been pursuing legal action to secure funding for the project.

The project has been delayed due to various factors. When building the urbanisation, the constructor of Lomas de Cabo Roig failed to comply with the urban planning agreement, which included the construction of the pedestrian walkway. As a result, the project has been postponed several times.
