A team of divers from the Civil Guard is still searching for a 50-year-old man whose car fell ended up in the sea in Punta Prima.
The police attended the incident just after 10pm on Friday evening when a red Audi was seen floating upside down in the sea just off the Punta Prima cliffs on the border between Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja
A team of divers is still looking for the occupant, believed to be a 50-year-old man from Murcia.
When officers went down the cliff to the car they entered the water to check the condition of the driver and possible occupants, but the vehicle was empty. The engine was still running with the lights on. The only item of note that they found in the car was a mobile phone.
Shortly afterwards the incident was attended by health personnel, Civil Guard and firefighters, who went into the water with diving equipment, but could only confirm what the Local Police had described.
The police eventually made contact with the driver’s family at 5:15 am, on Saturday morning. They said that they had not heard from him since Friday afternoon. At 6:15 a.m., family members travelled to the Orihuela Costa police station where they were brought up to date with details of the search.
A childhood friend has also travelled from Murcia to help investigators. He explained that his friend, who is married and has two teenage children, is a responsible person and also a keen sportsman.
As the search by the divers continues, sources close to the investigation state that several theories are being considered. There are no signs of skidding or of any damage, but there is also no evidence that he could have jumped from the car upon impact.
