The professor and researcher took part in the 26th Meeting of Families and Young People with Aniridia, sharing the latest therapeutic advances

Professor Jorge Alió has been honoured by the Spanish Aniridia Association for his ‘invaluable contribution to the organisation’s work and his commitment to people with aniridia’. This is stated on the plaque presented to the Professor of Ophthalmology and Honorary Researcher at the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) in Elche at the 26th Meeting of Families and Young People with Aniridia, held on 25th April 2026 in Sant Joan d’Alacant. The event was targeted at patients, families, young people and professionals related to this rare eye condition.

During this event, Jorge Alió gave a lecture entitled “Treatment of corneal opacities with autologous mesenchymal cells”, focusing on new therapeutic options for improving visual quality in patients with corneal abnormalities associated with aniridia.

Aniridia is a rare congenital condition that affects the development of the iris and may be associated with other visual problems such as low vision, glaucoma, cataracts, corneal abnormalities and complications affecting the ocular surface. ‘A multidisciplinary approach, clinical research and support for families are key to improving the visual prognosis and quality of life of people suffering from this condition, which is generally genetic in origin’, explains Dr Alió, who features in “The Ophthalmologist Power List 2025” as the 7th Most Influential and Inspiring Ophthalmologist in the World in Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and is the only Spanish doctor among the top 50.

This new recognition reinforces Prof. Jorge Alió’s commitment to advanced ophthalmology, research into rare eye diseases and collaboration with patient associations –a vital area for bringing medical innovation to those who need it most.
