The Civil Guard in Alicante has arrested a 57-year-old Spanish man on multiple occasions for allegedly committing a variety of crimes, including four counts of robbery with violence and intimidation, one count of sexual assault, one theft, and one instance of fraud involving the use of stolen bank cards.
The investigation, named Operation “Barista,” began in August 2024 when the Torrevieja Civil Guard received a complaint about a theft and subsequent fraudulent use of stolen bank cards. During the investigation, officers uncovered more serious crimes in the vicinity of La Mata Natural Park.
Targeting Vulnerable Victims
The suspect reportedly targeted women walking alone, threatening and robbing them. In one instance, he physically assaulted a victim and committed sexual assault. Between September and November, investigators analysed complaints and noted a consistent modus operandi and suspect description.
This led to increased surveillance in the area with support from the Torrevieja Main Post, prioritizing the suspect’s capture due to the severity and frequency of incidents.
On November 21, officers identified and arrested the suspect based on his matching characteristics, including a distinct physical feature. At the time of his arrest, he carried a fanny pack containing a knife and a multipurpose tool, which were seized as evidence.
Ongoing Investigation
The man has been charged with theft, fraud, two counts of robbery with violence, and sexual assault. Further investigations linked him to additional crimes, resulting in two more arrests by the end of 2024.
The case remains under investigation, with authorities working to determine if the suspect is connected to other incidents in the same area. Proceedings have been submitted to the Torrevieja Court of Instruction.
