Twenty new solar-powered LED streetlights have been installed at several locations across Orihuela Costa as part of efforts to improve safety, sustainability and public lighting in coastal areas.
The work forms part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan at Destination, known as PSTD 4.
The new lighting has been installed in areas where existing illumination was either insufficient or in need of improvement. The locations include the Barranco Rubio seafront promenade, the stretch between Cala Bosque and Cala Capitán, the Cabo Roig-Aguamarina promenade and the esplanade outside the municipal offices on the coast.
The main aim of the project is to improve road and pedestrian safety, particularly in busy areas used regularly by residents, visitors and tourists. At the same time, the council says the initiative introduces a more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly solution for public lighting along the coastline.
The new streetlights are mounted on 4.5-metre columns and operate using solar panels. They are fitted with LED technology and motion sensors and do not require connection to the electricity grid. This makes them easier to install while also helping to reduce energy consumption.
The base tender budget for the project was €48,279, including VAT.
Orihuela’s Department of the Coast said the work represents “a concrete and visible improvement in highly used areas of Orihuela Costa, reinforcing safety, urban quality and the sustainability of our coastal areas.”
The installation is part of wider municipal efforts to modernise public spaces and improve services in Orihuela Costa, an area that continues to experience high levels of residential use, tourism and demand for better infrastructure.
