The astronomical summer began on June 21 with the Summer Solstice—a moment marked by the sun’s apparent pause at the peak of its northward journey. The name “Solstice” derives from the Latin words “Sol” (sun) and “sistere” (to stand still).
For thousands of years, cultures worldwide have observed this celestial event with festivals, rituals, and bonfires. Traditionally linked to the Feast Day of St. John the Baptist on June 24, these celebrations have deep historical roots, especially along the Mediterranean coast where vibrant parties, fireworks, and bonfires honour the spirit of Sant Joan.
Embracing this tradition, the brethren of Oliva La Safor Lodge No. 112 hosted a memorable Solstice Dinner at La Bresca Restaurant in Els Poblets. More than 40 lodge members and their guests gathered beneath the shade of Jacaranda trees, enjoying the garden’s charming ambiance as they celebrated the season.
Despite temperatures soaring above 30°C, a refreshing sea breeze provided welcome relief. Live entertainment from Dave Manhatten had guests swaying to classic hits from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, while a few adventurous attendees took to the dance floor to the tunes of Billy Ocean, The Drifters, and The Monkees.
In the true spirit of the evening, a well-supported raffle raised €300 for the Lodge’s charity fund.
Worshipful Master W. Bro. David Clarke expressed his gratitude: “We are truly grateful to everyone who joined us this evening. We hope you’ve had a wonderful time. As always, we are humbled by your generosity, and I can assure you that every euro raised tonight will go towards supporting worthwhile causes in the Marina Alta region.”
As the sun dipped below the western horizon, the team at Oliva La Safor Lodge No. 112 ensured that every guest left well-fed, refreshed, and filled with fond memories of an evening defined by warmth, fellowship, and celebration.
