Torrevieja City Council is expanding its speed enforcement efforts with the installation of two new fixed speed camera booths, one on Avenida Alfredo Nobel near the Mar Bella senior residence, and another planned for Avenida de Paris. This follows the success of previous installations on Avenida Gregorio Marañón, Avenida Desiderio Rodríguez, and Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas.
The initiative, costing nearly €60,000 and awarded to SICE (the city’s street lighting maintenance provider), brings the city’s total to five booths, though only two fixed radar devices will be in use at a time, rotating between locations. Additionally, a mobile radar remains in operation. The uncertainty about which booths are active aims to encourage consistent compliance with speed limits.
Before permanent installation, each radar must go through a period of testing, calibration, and official approval, which could delay activation by several months. These radars are designed to improve safety by monitoring vehicle speed with high precision, capable of detecting speeds between 20 and 320 km/h across up to six lanes in both directions. They capture images and relevant data in secure, tamper-proof formats.
The council’s strategy has already shown results: in areas where speed limits were reduced to below 40 km/h, such as near Acequión Beach and San Roque, serious accidents involving pedestrians have decreased. Hundreds of fines ranging from €200 to €500 have been issued since mid-2023, covering the initial investment and reinforcing the program’s deterrent effect.
The devices are part of a broader plan to enhance traffic safety and reduce accidents in urban areas known for speeding, particularly those near beaches and residential zones. Officials expect that the additional cameras will further discourage reckless driving and contribute to safer streets for both motorists and pedestrians in Torrevieja.
