Cartagena experienced a landmark moment on Holy Wednesday as more than 8,000 cruise passengers disembarked in the city, marking one of the busiest days in its cruise tourism history.
With five cruise ships docking in a single day—a rare occurrence—this milestone highlights the growing appeal of Cartagena as a premier Mediterranean destination.
The influx of visitors included passengers from vessels such as the Wind Star, carrying just 148 guests, and the massive AIDAcosma, bringing more than 3,300 tourists. Coordinating the arrival of five ships at once is a complex logistical feat, requiring the use of multiple docks, including Juan Sebastián de Elcano, Curra, and San Pedro.
Pedro Pablo Hernández, president of the Port Authority of Cartagena, emphasized the significance of the day:
“It’s an important milestone because they’re visiting us at a time when the city is at its finest—not just during Holy Week, but year-round. With our rich heritage, culture, gastronomy, and many attractions, Cartagena offers a unique experience to all who arrive.”
He also highlighted that Holy Week enhances the visitor experience, as tourists were able to witness the city adorned for the religious festivities and feel the vibrant atmosphere that accompanies the processions and celebrations.
With cruise ship tourism surging, Cartagena is on track for a record-breaking year. In April alone, the port is expected to welcome around 27,000 cruise passengers, with nearly 17,000 of those arriving during Easter week. Holy Wednesday stands out as the single busiest day of the month.
Wednesday’s arrivals included Wind Star (148 passengers), Explora I – MSC Cruises (922 passengers), AIDAdiva (2,700 passengers), AIDAcosma (3,300 passengers) and Viking Jupiter (930 passengers). Combined with crew members, the total number of arrivals by sea surpassd 10,000 people.
The busy schedule continues throughout the week. On Friday, April 18, three more ships are expected:
Wind Surf – Windstar Cruises (300 passengers)
Club Med 2 – Club Med Marine (386 passengers)
Azamara Journey – Azamara Cruises (781 passengers)
On Holy Saturday, April 19, two larger vessels will dock:
Brilliance of the Seas (2,800 passengers)
AIDABlu (2,700 passengers)
Finally, the Corinthian will bring 100 passengers on Easter Sunday, April 20, concluding a historic Easter week for Cartagena’s cruise tourism industry.
With ideal spring weather and a vibrant festive atmosphere, Cartagena is seizing this opportunity to showcase its charm to thousands of international visitors, further solidifying its status as a leading cruise destination in southern Europe.
