The match was split into 4 sections, with 4 on A and B sections and 3 on C and D sections.
The weights were, once again, on the low side and we are flummoxed as to why they aren’t still having a munch, they being the carp!
At least, there were two anglers that broke the double figure barrier, and they were Martin Fisher from peg 13 with the top weight of the day, 17kg.
The other angler with a double figure net was one of our Belgian chappies, Marnix De Groot, otherwise known as Max…. he plucked out 14kg from the (current) in form peg 41 of Section D.
In fact, it was that section that produced the next two top weights and both Kevin Thurgood (KT) and John Waples (JW) from pegs 37 and 39 respectively with 7kg each.
A section (1to 9) is generally favoured by the match boys…it has always been consistent, and yesterday was no exception, it was consistently crap!
The winner ‘Yours Truly’ Steve Higgins (peg 4) was fishless and bite less until 3pm…then came along the sections ‘village idiot’ and a nice 8lb carp was carefully landed and placed in the net. It was joined, some 20 minutes later by a 4lb barbel…. total weight 6kg 200 grammes.
Up until the ‘village idiot’ arrived, the angler next door was way ahead of the field, a certain ex-world Veterans Champion, Harry Billing (peg 5) and he finished 2nd with 2 barbel and a mullet for 4kg 200 grammes.
In 3rd place from Peg 8, was ‘The Juggernaut’ John Havercroft with a solitary mullet for a level 1kg.
I won’t mention that peg 2, occupied by the ‘Professor’ Roy Dainty had the 3 dreaded letters recorded………SFA.
Section B (The Wides) is liked by many, the sport is better…but harder work due to its width of 16 metres.
I’ve already reported that Martin Fisher snaffled 17kg from peg 13 and way, way back in 2nd place, much to the delight of all was our only Lady angler, Marlene Hutchinson who weighed in 5kg700 grammes from peg 17. Neil ‘Bagger’ Bomford didn’t lie up to his name and could only put 4.400 in from the other end peg, number 11.
4th and last place was Alan Frith from peg 15 with 3kg 300 grammes.
Section C has been much maligned by a few from another club……. but It’s a good job we don’t listen to them….for Dave Hutchinson from (end peg AGAIN) peg 25 put a healthy 5kg 780 grammes on the scales.
Keith (Hully) Hirst wasn’t too far behind Hutch and weighed in a credible 4kg 160 grammes from fancied peg 24.
It was a bad day for the Jocks, they got stuffed at rugby and our Scottish member, Ronnie Arthur from end peg 22 had the second SFA against his weight.
Our next league match is Sunday the 23rd of this month and then, on the 28th we have our first ‘Aqualyze water drinking systems’ sponsored series at Bellus.
