As part of the Animal Protection Department’s efforts to adapt to the new Animal Welfare Law, a Municipal Veterinarian position has been created. This position has been filled through an agreement with the Elche City Council’s job bank until the official opposition process to fill it is completed.
For over two decades, the position of veterinarian in the Torrevieja City Council has been vacant, hindering the daily operations of this department. This situation is now set to change significantly. According to the Animal Protection Councilor, Concha Sala, the position was filled just a few days ago by the veterinarian Beatriz Lloret Gómez.
After several meetings to assess technical needs and a visit to the Municipal Animal Shelter, the new vet has already begun her work.
Some of the objectives set by the Animal Protection Department include:
Public campaigns promoting sterilization, disease prevention, and animal identification.
Raising public awareness and developing educational and sensitization measures against animal abandonment and abuse.
Promoting the adoption of companion animals.
Implementing feral cat colony management programs.
Developing programs for the control of identification and authorized breeding.
The creation of protocols for animals in situations of abandonment due to force majeure will also be considered. Protocols and evacuation plans for natural disasters, pandemics, or similar emergencies will be developed.
Additionally, and as a priority, the new veterinarian will oversee the construction of the new Municipal Animal Shelter, which will resume shortly. Another task to be carried out is the revision and implementation of the new Municipal Ordinance, which is in an advanced stage of drafting, along with the legalisation and control of the municipality’s feral cat colonies.
