A socialist councillor in Torrevieja, Margarita de Francisco, has seen her request for compensation denied after a fall at the infamous Toyo Ito ‘caracola’ structure. This abandoned project, once intended as a mud spa, has become a dilapidated eyesore within the Punta de la Víbora natural park.
The incident occurred in 2021, before De Francisco assumed her current role as a councillor. She filed a claim for compensation on behalf of an individual who had suffered a fall at the site. However, the Governing Board rejected the claim, citing the nature of the land as a rustic area with uneven terrain and abundant weeds.
The council emphasized that the area is not suitable for fencing and that visitors should exercise caution. Furthermore, the claimant failed to provide a detailed report quantifying the damages or to submit additional documentation within the specified deadlines.
This is not the first instance of a councillor seeking compensation from the municipality. Former mayor José Manuel Dolón (Los Verdes) previously filed a claim for damages after a flat tire, which was also unsuccessful.
